Emirati Women’s Day, observed on August 28, is a significant occasion that recognizes the contributions of Emirati women across various fields. In this exclusive interview with Packaging MEA, Al Mar’ashi reflects on the significance of this day and discusses EEG’s efforts in shaping sustainable development policies and practices. As a leader deeply committed to environmental stewardship, Al Mar’ashi outlines the organization’s milestones, challenges, and her vision for the future of sustainability in the UAE.

Usha Benjamin (USHA): What does Emirati Women’s Day signify for you,?
Habiba Al Mar’ashi (HABIBA): Emirati Women’s Day holds deep meaning for me as it symbolizes both celebration and responsibility. Personally, it’s an opportunity to honor the resilience and achievements of Emirati women, and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who paved the way for us today. Professionally, it marks the progress we’ve made in leadership and STEM fields, while highlighting the continued need for advocacy and gender equality. It inspires me to champion initiatives that support women’s empowerment, so future generations can thrive and contribute fully to the nation’s growth.

USHA: How do you see Emirati women’s role evolving in sustainability?

HABIBA: Emirati women are increasingly stepping into leadership roles and offering unique perspectives that address complex environmental challenges. They are driving sustainable practices within industries, especially in packaging, and shaping culturally relevant strategies. As more women pursue careers in STEM, they are better equipped to contribute to advancements in sustainable packaging technologies. Women are not only participants but also key drivers of change, influencing policies that promote sustainable practices and helping to create a resilient future for the UAE.

USHA: How has EEG transformed traditional waste management in the UAE?

HABIBA: EEG’s efforts have redefined traditional waste management by promoting sustainability and community involvement. Through awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and comprehensive recycling programs, we have significantly increased recycling rates and reduced dependency on landfills. Our collaboration with government entities and businesses has fostered a culture of environmental responsibility, leading to enhanced public health and a cleaner environment.

USHA: What are EEG’s key achievements in promoting recycling?

HABIBA: We’ve seen a substantial increase in recycling rates driven by our nationwide awareness campaigns and community engagement. Our programs have educated millions on the importance of recycling, and we divert thousands of tonnes of waste from landfills annually. We’ve involved thousands of students in practical recycling activities, creating a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens. Additionally, our partnerships with businesses have influenced corporate sustainability practices, and our policy advocacy has shaped national regulations supporting sustainable development.

USHA: What challenges have you encountered in advancing sustainability initiatives in the UAE, and how have you overcome them?
HABIBA: One major challenge has been shifting public mindsets towards more sustainable behaviors. People are accustomed to a throwaway culture, so we’ve tackled this through educational campaigns and community engagement. Another challenge is the lack of recycling infrastructure in some areas, which we’ve addressed by working closely with local authorities to establish collection points. Business hesitancy due to cost concerns has been met with comprehensive support, showing the long-term benefits such as cost savings and improved brand reputation.

USHA: How can the packaging industry contribute more to sustainability and recycling efforts?

HABIBA: The packaging industry can adopt sustainable materials, invest in designs that facilitate recyclability, and support innovative recycling technologies. Businesses should engage consumers through transparency about sustainability practices and collaborate within the industry to share best practices. Adopting sustainability as a core value and setting ambitious goals will inspire others and drive significant advancements in this sector.

USHA: Could you share some success stories from EEG’s various collection campaigns?

HABIBA: Our Glass Collection Campaign, launched in 2005, has mobilized communities and resulted in thousands of tonnes of glass being recycled annually. Similarly, our Paper and Plastic Collection Campaigns have seen impressive results, diverting large volumes of waste and educating participants about the environmental benefits. These initiatives have fostered environmental responsibility and a community culture of recycling that extends beyond the campaigns themselves.

A proud moment after another impactful Can Collection Campaign, showcasing community spirit and commitment to sustainability.

USHA: What role do you envision for Emirati women in the future of environmental initiatives in the UAE?

HABIBA: I foresee Emirati women continuing to lead in environmental advocacy and sustainable development. Their influence will grow as they are empowered through education and leadership opportunities. They will be at the forefront of national efforts addressing climate change, waste management, and conservation, contributing to a sustainable future for the UAE.

USHA: What are some of EEG’s upcoming projects or initiatives that you are excited about?
HABIBA: We’re excited to partner in the upcoming Arabia CSR Network Forum and Awards on October 9-10 to showcase innovative sustainability practices across sectors. On October 24, we will host a panel discussion on ‘Packaging Innovation: Influence on Environment & Health.’ Our annual ‘Clean UAE’ campaign in December will mobilize thousands of volunteers across the country to enhance environmental stewardship

USHA: How can individuals and organizations get involved and support EEG’s ongoing efforts to promote recycling and sustainability?

HABIBA: Individuals can join our collection campaigns, participate in clean-up events, and advocate for sustainability within their communities. Businesses can collaborate with EEG by sponsoring events or integrating sustainable practices. Membership with EEG offers access to resources and networking opportunities. Together, we can create a sustainable future for the UAE.

Habiba Al Mar’ashi’s unwavering commitment to sustainability highlights the critical role of Emirati women in shaping a sustainable UAE. As Emirati women continue to take on leadership roles, their contributions will be pivotal in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and achieving national sustainability goals.
